WHAT’S THE STORY BEHIND THE INNOVATION?

Consumer needs have considerably changed through the past five years. Many studies have demonstrated that consumers are increasingly requesting food products that are healthy, nutritive and well presented. Providing to the market a certified product has become a must to target and survive in both national and international markets. However, the lack of know-how, high production costs of certified products, the absence of mass production, the absence of the application of quality standards as well as the lack of added value creation through packaging and labeling have provided a barrier to piercing through national and international markets.

NATAGRI aims at developing a sustainable agriculture system in Lebanon to access international markets. The foundation of the company and its strategy were inspired by the actual situation of the agricultural sector in Lebanon that suffers from major problems. Their vision is to restructure the agriculture production societies in Lebanon by offering the appropriate means and skills that will help upgrade the Lebanese agricultural sector to an international level.

The actual situation of SMEs is quite precarious considering (i) the continuous reduction of arable terrains in the country, (ii) the poor economic status of the farmers who are usually the least to profit from their production since a big cut is dedicated to middlemen, (iii) the lack of strategic long-term thinking, (iv) the lack of management tools, techniques, infrastructure and management control, (v) the lack of governmental or any other institutional support for the remaining subsidized farmers, and (vi) the deteriorating economic and political situation and its effects on the national and international agricultural sector.
