WHAT’S THE INNOVATION?

SmartLand provides a smart, automated irrigation and fertigation system linked to a mobile app. Its goal is to help farmers optimize their production and operation model by providing real-time data about the soil they use. The solution consists of sensing units installed in the field that take soil readings and send them to the main controller, which analyzes the data and instructs the valve unit to become operational and the pump to start pumping water if the land requires it. Once the plant has taken its needs, the system will automatically close. If the reading indicates that the plants require fertilizer, the controller will send an order to the fertigation machine, which will operate automatically. The system is linked to a mobile application for control and monitoring, where the user can browse all the information and receive field status notifications. Furthermore, the company uses a solar pump for renewable energy to replace the traditional fuel-powered pump.

WHAT’S THE STORY BEHIND THE INNOVATION?

SmartLand’s founders came from an agricultural background and always assisted their families in gardening processes. Their families, just like farmers, were suffering from increased costs and low yields because of water, fertilizer, fuel, energy, and pesticide waste. It all began in April 2019, when SmartLand was chosen alongside 24 other startups out of 62 applicants to be a part of the Agrytech Program, which was funded by the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Lebanon and organized by Berytech. SmartLand had the chance to graduate from the program with a real, innovative solution for irrigation and fertigation. Since then, they have been working tirelessly on an automated irrigation and fertigation system with the primary goal of reducing water waste and increasing agricultural yield quality and quantity.

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?

The SmartLand system has numerous advantages that can significantly improve crop production, reduce fertilizer waste, reduce the amount of water used for irrigation, and finally reduce chemical pollutants. This system can also help to reduce pollution and increase biodiversity. On the other hand, using less water and fertilizer means less runoff and leaching into groundwater supplies and waterways. This system can also aid in the conservation of scarce water resources in our regions. In general, the agricultural sector requires a modern, smart irrigation and fertigation solution to be implemented on farms in order to address the challenges that farmers face, and SmartLand is here to provide this solution to the market.

WHO IS BENEFITTING?

SmartLand is implementing a smart solution that will allow farmers all over Lebanon and the MENA region to use less water, fertilizer, fuel, and pesticides. It will manage its operations to achieve multiple goals. SmartLand intends to empower farmers to make the best use of their land by seeding them twice in one season, particularly for seasonal crops such as potatoes, cucumbers, and tomatoes, so that they are available to consumers all year. SmartLand aims to expand green spaces by installing irrigation systems in reserves and rugged mountains and utilizing the system’s self-control feature. Finally, SmartLand hopes to reduce the threat to food security by assisting farmers in improving and expanding their production and making the best use of available agricultural land.
